Diary of a Cosmonaut

We woke up early so we’d have more time for exercises and tennis. The weather is beautiful. We jogged; our masseuse Masha joined us and makes us do stretching. Today is a full medical day. I like the new method of training the vestibular apparatus for weightlessness. First we train on the tilt table, head down at various angles up to 60 degrees and back, and then we train on the rotating chair. I worked with “Argument” — an instrument for ultrasonic imaging of the aorta, mitral valve, and heart ventricle. Everything went well. They fitted me with “Karkas” trousers made from a new elastic material that compresses the lower body. They’re supposed to be effective after landing, protecting against a sharp rush of blood to the legs. In the evening by the pool, we talked with Volodya Kovalyonok about the flight. I like that he speaks frankly about his shortcomings and about the difficulties of spaceflight; he wants to be of some use to us. He took it upon himself to do a preliminary review of the documentation, acting as a filter against possible errors.
