Diary of a Cosmonaut

Slept poorly, but still did my exercises and played tennis. Tolya is still sleeping; he’s tired. I’m upset: today Znamensky changed the bandage on my toe. I asked him what would happen if the flight were tomorrow. He answered — you wouldn’t fly. Now that’s an answer! In the morning I’ve been going through flight documentation for the transport ship and the station, as well as ocean experiments. The tasks are interesting: studying eddies, the behavior of water flowing around islands, underwater peaks, reefs. Then training for weightlessness. They found Staphylococcus aureus in my mouth and nose and are killing it with some kind of spray. Nasty stuff — your nose runs for about an hour. On Earth, this staph infection is nothing, but bringing it aboard the station would be very dangerous.

After lunch I worked with the trainer on the KTF treadmill, following the in-flight exercise schedule. I ran for 2 minutes at idle speed — frankly, it’s hard. That’s a good thing: in flight it’ll be possible to get a sufficient workout. In the evening I played tennis with our doctor: the score was 5-5. In the sixth game it was 40-40, and I won.
